Defining how regions can grow
The Bay of Plenty Regional Growth Study launched in May 2015 sets out clearly defined opportunities to grow jobs and exports in the Bay of Plenty region.
The MartinJenkins report is based on a close exploration of the region’s potential, based on research, data and discussion with industry and community leaders. This was filtered through a process of rigorous economic analysis, so the most viable opportunities for growth are identified in each sector and for the region.
The study has determined actions needed to support growth in six industries, and also identified cross-cutting developments to support growth overall, such as improving water management and transport infrastructure.
Local leaders have welcomed the study, saying it could become the cornerstone of future economic development for their area. It helped to reinforce to central government where investment was required to realise particular opportunities with real potential.
The Toi Moana Bay of Plenty Growth Study: Opportunities Report was released in Tauranga on 12 May by Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce, Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy and Associate Economic Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell.
The study will form the basis of a regional action plan built between government and community stakeholders, to achieve economic and social gains based on the identified opportunities.
The Ministers’ media release noted the report’s authoritative analysis and pinpointing of real investment opportunities that allow the region’s growth potential to be realised, particularly through the primary, manufacturing and tourism sectors.
“It is an independent report that was produced after extensive discussions with stakeholders in the Bay of Plenty community. The report highlights how the Bay of Plenty can build from an already strong platform of collaboration between industry, research organisations, iwi and local and central government,” Mr Guy said.
The comprehensive study is part of the Regional Growth Study Programme, led by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) and the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).
The programme aims to identify growth opportunities in the regions and builds on the East Coast Regional Economic Potential Study (released in April 2014) and the Northland Regional Growth Study (released in February 2015). Both of these studies were also led by MartinJenkins.
